The most common tests are IELTS & OET, and these test results are accepted from all countries. From countries where these tests are not available, the Australian Government also may accept:

• The Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic.
• The Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) test (also known as Certificate in Advanced English).
• The Test of English as a Foreign Language Paper-Based test (TOEFL pBT).
• The Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic.

The Occupational English Test (OET) is a language test for practitioners who have qualified and practice their profession in one country and wish to reach temporary registration to practice their profession in a different country which has an English-speaking environment. OET measures English language proficiency as it is utilized in medical and health professions. It’s composed to guarantee that language competency is evaluated in a relevant professional context.

There are four principal levels of English Language Proficiency in the Australian Migration Framework:

• Superior English– Applicants are placed in this level if they score a minimum of 8 out of maximum 9 in their IELTS test score in all 4 tests, or a minimum grade of `A´ for each of the four components of the OET test. Applicants of this level are awarded the maximum 20 points in the GSM points test.
• Proficient English– Applicants who score a minimum of 7 in their IELTS test score in each of the 4 components, or a minimum grade of `B´ for each of the four components of the OET test are included in this skill level. Applicants of this level are awarded 10 points in the GSM points test.
• Competent English– Applicant of this level are the ones who have an IELTS test score of at least 6 for each of the 4 components of the test, or a minimum grade of `B´ for each of the four components of the OET test. Applicants in this level are not granted any points in the GSM points test anymore.
• The Test of English as a Foreign Language Paper-Based test (TOEFL pBT).
• Vocational English – Applicants with an IELTS score of at least 5 in each of the 4 components of the test, or a minimum grade of `B´ for each of the four components of the OET test are included in this level. This is the minimum English Language Requirement for Skilled sponsored applicants and a requirement for the Employer nomination scheme.
